I just hit the road for a serious walk, after Katrina's alarm went off at 6:30 (and she just hit snooze again at 7:26... it makes me laugh a little). I thought I was going along at a pretty good pace, was sweating, etc, when I her this huffing and puffing coming up from behind me. It is still dark out so I was slightly concerned that perhaps a bear was upon me, or a rabid deer, but in fact it was a speedwalking grampa. He was hardcore! He completely overtook me but I felt the challenge, I hit the pavement, I worked it. I kept up to him for a while, but then I lost him around the corner. Tomorrow.. tomorrow will be different.

I used to ride my bike a couple of miles to where my garden was. One morning I had the same thing happen. thought i was clipping along really well and suddenly this old guy about 75 years old just glides by me on a 15 speed racing bike all in spandex and looking like an 18 year old. It was highly demoralizing :) It was also pretty common there in Eugene to.

So, you went to Victoria? BC?

I feel guilty about using treadmills and not the ground to run on, but this post has reminded me that some people live in much more beautiful places than Los Angeles. Not that I would want bears in my neighborhood, but I bet you have lots of trees too. :}

I have actually only ever seen a couple of bears in my lifetime, and I grew up with crown land for miles behind me and nature reserve for miles beside me... We did see a lot of deer though, and heard about cougars.

I see trees everywhere, but then we also have lakes, ocean, a glacier, mountains and some pavement :P

Lol...if only you were to travel 2 hours north. I see an average of 30 bears each pring/summer. I have seen 4 cougars in my lifetime, and deer are just...more popular then people ;)

I miss civilization. Save me.

Ohh that would drive me nuts when I'd get passed by granpas. Even worse when they were running!
