My baby is 6 months old. I remember saying to Tim that January felt so far away, I couldn't imagine being there, getting ready to feed Paxton solids, seeing my teeny little baby sitting and getting ready to crawl and all that.

This morning he tried to pull himself up to a sit, from laying down, but fell back down. So cool to see him growing and developing. He'll get weighed and measured next week at his 6 month checkup. He's giggling more, he loves music, loves when daddy dances him to music. He's enthralled by his big sister. He tries to be brave when I'm getting ready for bed and he just wants me to crawl into bed and nurse. You can see in his eyes he really wants to cry, but he doesn't. He has learned to whine and I call him my little puppy. He thinks I'm so funny. He's very interested in daddy, his eyes follow him as daddy moves around. He holds his hands out to me now, to be picked up. When I say "hands.. hands up!" he gives me his hands and then lifts his body as I lift him. Diaper changes aren't the worst thing in the world anymore, and the car seat is becoming more acceptable, just slightly. He tries to lick my fingers while I eat, and I give him little tastes. He always wants my water bottle and he knows where to put his mouth. He pants at my laptop and tries to hit the keys till I play music on youtube. He gets excited when I sign "nursie". He finally does a big giant open mouth to nurse, no more slurping the nipple in. He can do a pincher grasp and my breasts have little bruises all over them to prove it. He's wonderful.

My love for him just grows and grows. I'm so blessed to be a momma, my dream come true. I appreciate every day of the last six months, every snuggle with him, every sigh as he falls asleep on my shoulder, every smile and even his little fits of rage.

We spent our day at my doula's (and friend) house, [livejournal.com profile] pyxiwulf. Her 9 year old gets along so well with my 9 year old. Her daughter gave Reagan a giant hug as we left and on our way to the car Reagan said "That was my first hug from her". I think it made her feel really special.

Homemade pizza for dinner tonight, I was smart and made the dough in the morning. Mine was cheeseless with no gross vegan cheese on it this time. Baby is going to have his first bit of food tomorrow, unless I chicken out again.

oh and:

Happy six months to Paxton and congrats to Mama!

What food are planning to start with, just out of curiosity? I did cereal at first myself but I know lots of people that start with fruit. Emilie's first non-cereal foods were bananas (hated them but she loves them now that she can feed pieces to herself) and avocado (always a favorite).

I'm going to start him with our dinner, so funny enough it'll be a chicken leg bone stripped of everything, some teeny pieces of meat, little bit of whatever veggies and side we are having, probably a bit of baked potato! I'm going to try doing 'baby led weaning'. I always liked the sound of it and it's what my best friend did with her daughter and my sister did with her four.

I have Dr. Sears Baby Book and he suggests giving a chicken leg bone too, stripped of most everything and the thin bone on the side. Good for teething, too! I'm always curious about what others choose to do.

I chose to wait on giving Emilie meat until she's a year old, but obviously there's so many different ways to go about it and no one right way. I do make all of Emilie's food (I don't really get why you'd feed jarred, processed stuff when it's easy to do fresh fruits & veggies) and she is now feeding herself much of what we eat. I hope Paxton enjoys his first tastes of solids!

I think that's the way to do it, fresh foods. I remember that now, that you are waiting on meat. What made you decide that (I'm always curious too). Amy gave me a stack of babyfood someone gave her, I'm thinking about using it in smoothies :P

My feeling is that she is getting all of her protein needs from the formula, so I would rather introduce her to fresh fruits, veggies and grains first. I did start giving her some dairy (cheese and yogurt) at nine months. I also think that of all the foods I could feed her, meat will be the most difficult for her body to digest. And meat purees are disgusting, texturally -- she's just now getting the ability to chew firmer foods. So I decided to wait until I feel like she is better able to process meat as well as feed normal (not pureed) pieces to herself. I will probably do the chicken leg bone thing and also start off with some mild, flaky fish.

Somebody gave me a ton of babyfood coupons and I gave them away via Freecycle. At least someone can benefit!

that makes sense!

I think that most ways work for feeding babies, although I don't see the sense in starting out with all rice cereal, so bland. The thing I like about the baby led weaning is that they feed themselves, and hopefully that starts them with a healthy relationship with food, instead of just having the parent trying to get them to finish off that last bit of something in a jar when they are full.

I think the original idea in starting out with rice cereal is that because it is so bland, it's very easy for them to digest. And since you mix it with formula or breastmilk, it also has a familiar taste.

I definitely disagree with any kind of force-feeding or trying to finish off the last of something. Emilie eats until she is full -- and it's pretty easy to figure out her cues. I have no quota to fill, you know? :) Sometimes she eats a lot, and sometimes it's a little. Even young babies can figure out when they're full!

I want her to have a healthy relationship with food and a varied palate, so she get a little bit of everything and most of everything that I eat. That included pickles yesterday! I had a few slices on my plate and she grabbed one, so why not? I fully expected her not to like the sourness but she enjoyed them!

Awesome, sounds like you are following the same thing that I want to follow, I think it's just natural to want to feed baby what we are eating. They even say curries and things are fine, the only thing to really avoid is too much salt.

Yep, pretty much, only I introduced foods more one at a time. I think it's great to introduce them to spices and herbs -- I put cinnamon on apples, vanilla in pears, etc. How else are they going to get used to them? I've also given her dal and risottos with various spices. She loved it.

Right, that's what I used to do when I had my daycare and parents wanted me to introduce foods, one food for 3 or 4 days, and then move onto a new food.

oh dear, I do love Amy's pizzas.... but I'm so scared of the fake cheeses. I wonder if her soy cheese has casein in it.
